The Swamp Fox of Snows Island” is the Incredible Story of a Historic Hero Whose Legacy Lives On

“Francis Marion: The Swamp Fox of Snows Island” is the creation of published author, Rebecca Dunahoe, a retired clinical counselor who is a mother of two, Richard Dunahoe and Eves Hayes. Her children are the joy of her life. Rebecca Dunahoe loves being a people person. She loves reading, researching history, gardening, and being involved in her community.

“At age fifteen, Francis Marion’s family had moved to Georgetown, near the sea, and they probably spent time listening to sailors’ tales of exotic lands and adventure. In those times, a long voyage at sea was thought to improve the health of sickly people. The Bahamas, Barbados, or Bermuda were all likely destinations for a voyage from Georgetown. In his sixteenth year, Francis Marion decided to go to sea, probably against his mother’s wishes. His slight build and small size made him an unlikely sailor, but he found employment on a small schooner bound for the West Indies. Six other seamen made up the crew.” –Rebecca Dunahoe

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Rebecca Dunahoe’s new book is the historic biography of an unsung hero.

Francis Marion’s grandfather, Gabriel Marion, had fled the cruel persecutions of Louis XIV for England. They then left England to come to the new world of America. They settled along the Santee River about forty miles North of Charleston and about twenty miles south of what is now the seaport of Georgetown. As a youth, Francis Marion rode his horse through the streams, lakes, and swamps to learn the lay of the land.

Marion later fought in the Indian War, even after he nearly died in a ship wrecked. The War taught Francis the tactics and skills needed to wage guerrilla warfare. He and his men lived off the land while fighting, running, and hiding. He truly was a “Swamp Fox.” The British soldiers had given him his nickname, but it would return home with him and become part of the Snows Island legacy.
