National Association of Dental Laboratories Prepares Patients for Self-Advocacy

We understand that navigating dental options can be intimidating for a patient who may only see a dentist face-to-face twice a year.

Dentistry is not unlike other parts of the health care system. There is a wide range of options in the marketplace for patients to choose from in terms of providers and varying costs of care. With all the choices available, it is important to know who is conducting your dental treatment to ensure you choose the best and safest option.

“We understand that navigating dental options can be intimidating for a patient who may only see a dentist face-to-face twice a year. We want to help patients gain the knowledge and confidence needed to ask the right questions and get great, safe results,” said Bennett Napier, Executive Director of the National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL).

Through the “What’s In Your Mouth?” campaign, NADL shares the tips below for patients to help them prepare for dental treatment and advocate for their best interest.

Verify the dentist you are working with, or are considering, is licensed to practice in your state through the State Dental Board. The American Dental Association (ADA) shares a database with State Dental Board contact information.

Ensure your dentists work with a Certified Dental Laboratory, DAMAS certified laboratory, or Certified Dental Technician. This essential step can be completed by asking the dentist about the dental laboratory they work with and visiting the websites of each of these dental laboratories.

If you have a complaint against a dentist, you should file a formal complaint with the State Dental Board. Most state Boards and dental practice acts have a formal complaint process, although the process may be different in each state. Information on the complaint process in each state can be found on the ADA’s website.

Be careful using the internet to find the best dental deals. “Buy at your own risk. In most cases, they are operating illegally, outside of the dental practice act,” said Napier.
