Throughout the month of October, Homes & Land magazines across the United States doned pink ribbons on their covers in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in order to raise money for cancer research.
Magazine publishers and advertisers joined forces on a local level, while Homes & Land’s corporate office contributed with a $10,000 donation. The brand showcased its support through ribbon sponsorships, featured agent pages, “pink” listings, and more.
The American Cancer Society predicts an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. in 2017, along with 63,410 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. Despite these high numbers, breast cancer death rates have been decreasing over the past decade as a result of early detection, more advanced research, better treatment options, and increased awareness.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is intended to further increase the scope of the disease by keeping breast cancer at the forefront of the public eye, while also raising money for detection and research through various events throughout the U.S. during the entire month of October.
Several market magazines reported their money earned last month toward cancer research, with more results still to come.
Andrea Barrett-Casterano, Owner and Publisher of Homes & Land of Tucson submitted a magazine with 100 percent of its pages decorated with pink ribbons, totaling $840 towards research.
Another local publisher, Jo Anne Torkildson, raised approximately $4,725 between her two markets which was donated to a local Northern Colorado organization, Hope Lives. Homes & Land of Malibu also contributed roughly $5,000 to be donated toward local cancer research.
